| Resumo | The Western Bahia, Brazil, is spatially located within the São Francisco river basin and encompasses a rich hydrographic network and large flat lands suitable for irrigated cropping. Although is an environmental and economical relevant region in Brazil, it lacks of scientific information to support strategies and policy definition for sustainable water and land management. This study aimed to better understand the effects of deforestation on natural resources in Western Bahia. Our research included analysis on the effects of agricultural expansion, focusing on irrigated fields in the study region. We observed that an additional 29 irrigation pivots were established if compared to 2013 dataset produced by the National Water Agency. It indicates that there was an increase in irrigation water demand from the tributaries of the São Francisco river basin (superficial and underground water). We estimated that agriculture lands encompass 30.4% of the study region, a total of 34,117.6 km², by 2015. Irrigated fields encompass 1.7% of the study area, a total of 1,874.4 km² by 2015. The climate change studies predict a long-term increase in temperature (5 °C) and decrease in precipitation (15%), which it is likely to reduce even more water supplies in the study region. Based on it, we expect that the study region will experience a strong water deficit in the coming decades because of predicted increase of water demand and decrease of water supplies. Altogether, it may require strong climate adaptations of human activities in the study region. |
